Rhino Teak - Artist

As a native Santa Barbaran, Gary Fuller's love of the sea comes naturally. Surfing, sailing, diving and kayaking have been an integral part of his life. His interest in surfing nostalgia inspired him to replicate the wooden board masterpieces of the forties and fifties. He sought out master balsa wood shapers of that era, including Reynolds Yater, Dale Velzy, Donald Takayama and Gary Linden, who shared their secrets and techniques for wooden surfboard construction and shaping.

To create the highest quality boards, Gary traveled to Ecuador, where he found premium balsa in lengths of ten feet and more. Rhino

Combining his unique designs with the master shapers' know-how, and working with the best Ecuadorian balsa, Gary began Rhino Balsa, now the world's largest manufacturer of balsa wood surfboard blanks.

As his contribution to the preservation of the rain forest, Gary sought out only plantation-grown balsa wood. When he visited the plantations, he discovered beautiful exotic woods, particularly teak and walnut also growing there. Intrigued by the woods' dominant character, strength, grain variation and beauty, he envisioned creating quality furniture from these exotic woods. He wanted each piece to be so beautiful and well made that each would become a family heirloom.

Using the rhythm of the ocean as his theme, he incorporated the undulations of ocean waves into a clean strong design which showcased the natural beauty of the high contrasting wood grain. The result? Furniture that is both functional and a work of art. Thus, Rhino Teak was born.

These limited production pieces are custom designed and assembled using the highest standards of craftsmanship. Dovetail construction and top quality hardware guarantee these pieces will be around for a long time. The pieces are oiled using a combination of teak oil and orange oil to accentuate the contrast and satiny texture of the wood grain.
